There is no doubt that ‘90s nostalgia is this season’s biggest trend, and our Vintage Edition capsule of iconic fits and washes is your ticket to nailing it. We sat down with resident denim expert and product developer, Cerese, to hear more about the trend and what will be coming next to JW. Find out more here…
You have such great experience when it comes to denim, tell us a little about your background in the industry?
I’m originally from New Zealand but have been designing in Australia for over 15 years. I always knew I wanted to specialise in denim and got my lucky break working with Lee Jeans 10 years ago. Back then, denim was still made in Australia, which exposed me to the process of making denim fabric to washing at the laundry. I had some amazing mentors over the years and have been able to bring that expertise and passion with me to Jeanswest.
Talk us through the inspiration behind our new Vintage Edition denim collection?
Inspiration came from the huge vintage trend we are seeing in the US and Europe right now. Lots of relaxed straight leg jeans in vintage washes which is refreshing and a nice addition to the skinny jean in our wardrobe. Jeanswest has been around since the ‘70s so we were able to draw from our archives for some cool wash inspiration. The faded snow wash in the Alexa styles is a modern take on the ‘90s. We used a vintage rigid look fabric and added slight stretch to fit more body shapes. The Alexa Crop Straight is also available in Curve Embracer fit, something fun for our curve fashion customer to wear.
What are the key denim trends for this summer?
Straight leg jeans are definitely the key fashion shape to have this summer. If you are not quite ready for the straight leg, I would suggest the Joni Slim from our Vintage Edition range, which is in between a skinny and straight leg.
How will you be styling the new pieces?
I like to keep it classic on the top when my jeans are vintage. The Willow Puff Sleeve top is a great everyday tee with a modern sleeve to pair back, or the Maddie Button Thru Cami for a touch of linen this summer.
Do you have a favourite pair of vintage jeans?
My favourite jeans are a vintage pair I picked up at Rose Bowl market (a flea market in LA) on a buying trip years ago. I wear them as a relaxed straight leg, they are so comfy and soft, I have worn them so much.
Finally, any hot tips on how to best care for new Vintage Edition styles?
Cold wash inside out and never tumble dry!
