Denim Do’s & Don’ts

The first rule of buying jeans is, if you're in-store, you must try them on! You can’t find the right jean for you without it. When you’re in the change room:

  • squat in them,
  • sit down, and
  • walk around the change room area.

Spend at least a few minutes wearing them. This could be a relationship that will last for years and a few minutes up front will give the jean enough time to start to shape and mold to your body.

Try on the type of top you’ll be wearing with them to get the total look. This will help you decide if the jeans are exactly the style you are after.

If you know you’ll be wearing heels with your new jeans take them with you to try  them on.  The extra height will allow the jean to fall naturally. There’s nothing worse than having too much denim bunching up at your feet which distorts the whole leg profile.

Don't have the opportunity to try them on and are buying online?

Refer to our Find your right fit guide. Jeanswest offers a wide range of fits for both women and men that have been designed to flatter and enhance every body shape. This guide will help you work out which cut will best suit you. Looking for a more interactive fun way to work it out? Check out My Denim Match. And be sure to refer to our size charts for our fashion and core jean measurements.

And keep these additional tips in mind:

When buying stretch jeans, buy the next size down. Jeans will stretch by half a size and once worn, your great fitting jeans will start to look loose. Take note of the amount of Elastane in the the denim. More elastane = stretchier denim. Buying them super snug will ensure they continue to be the perfect fit.

If you need to have your jeans taken up, ask the tailor to sew the original hem back onto the jeans. This will give the look that they haven’t been taken up at all! (Jeanswest can of course help organise tailoring for you.)
