Seconds To Give
Giving Second-hand Clothing to Impoverished Villages
‘Seconds To Give’ was formed in 2005 to simply bring joy to small and impoverished villages in the Philippines through the distribution of second-hand clothing and other items from Australia. The program is administered by a Committee of energetic and committed volunteers, which allows for all donations to be passed directly to those in need.
In its initial year, ‘Seconds To Give’ orchestrated the distribution of over 485 kilograms of second-hand clothing from Australia to the residents of the small, rural village of Bario Sinubsuban on December 10, 2005 to coincide with another inspiring day - Make Poverty History Day.
Seconds to Give Australia is currently working with the Aboriginal community of Palm Island, which is situated 65 kilometres north-west of Townsville, in north QLD. Approximately 3500 people live on Palm Island. There are very few employment opportunities on the island and approximately 90% of the adult population is unemployed. Insufficient housing results in overcrowding and the cost of living is very high due to remoteness and a general lack of private enterprise. In 2011, we are planning to conduct research into the needs of the Palm Islanders and look at how we can establish short and long-term initiatives to add to the quality of life that exists for this community.
‘Seconds to Give’ will continue to further develop through the commitment of its volunteers and the generosity of the public and corporate sponsors. The program wishes to expand in able to reach many more villages, increase the range of items distributed and hopefully to collect funds to assist with urgent community needs such as food, repairs to infrastructure and basic educational equipment.
Jeanswest proudly supports ‘Seconds To Give’ in their mission with the supply of donations and also second hand clothing direct from Jeanswest employees! More information about ‘Seconds To Give’ can be found at their website, www.secondstogive.org
